Happy Mother's day

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations date back to Greek & Roman times ~
honoring mothers of the Gods and possibly honoring aspects of the Mother Earth.

During the American Civil War,
The first Mother's Day in the U.S. came in 1870 as Julia Ward Howe called for a
Mother's Day For Peace in response to the Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War, Ward Howe called on women to unite for peace. She wrote this Mother's Day Proclamation that asserts that surely mothers would not train their children to kill the children of other mothers; it is a call to women to unite for peace.

Mothers' Day Proclamation
Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be of water or of tears! Say firmly: "We will not have questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us reeking of carnage for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy, and patience. We women of one country will be too tender to those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the bosom of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own. It says "Disarm! Disarm!" The sword of murder is not the balance of justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession.

As men have forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each bearing after his time the sacred impress not of Caesar, but of God.

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.
Today, the proclamation is included in the Unitarian Universalist hymnal,
Singing the Living Tradition
.

Julia Ward Howe is also the author of the best known lyrics for
Battle Hymn Of The Republic written in 1861 and first published in 1862.

Mother's dayJulia Ward Howe was, in part, influenced by Anna Reeves Jarvis who in 1858 started "Mothers' Work Days"; she organized women throughout the Civil War to work for better sanitary conditions for both sides, and in 1868 she began work to reconcile southern and northern neighbors. Jarvis also had a lifelong dream to establish a memorial day for women and mothers. When Anna Reeves Jarvis died in 1907, her daughter Anna Marie Jarvis declared to honor her mother's dream to,"honor mothers, living and dead." In 1908, Anna distributed 500 white carnations to each mother in the congregation of her mother’s church. Today the St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia is home to the historical landmark, "Mother's Day Shrine". In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day, as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war. 2008 marks the centennial for the Mother's Day tradition we participate in started by Jarvis in her mother's memory at her church. It is noted that Anna Jarvis reportedly detested the commercialism that developed around the holiday. Mother's Day a century later is celebrated on the 2nd Sunday in May by many, many countries around the world including:
Aruba, Australia, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, Ecuador, Germany, Ghana, Honduras, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Latvia, Malta, Malaysia, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, Zimbabwe
