A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. ~Mahatma Gandhi

For the inspiration of Mahatma Gandhi, we give thanks!

Gandhi StampMohandus Gandi dedicated his life to the wider purpose of discovering truth, or Satya. Gandhi
is best remembered and revered for leading India to freedom & independance through civil disobedience enacted with total non-violence. He was the first to apply non-resistance & non-violence in the political arena & on such a wide scale. One of his best known movements was The Salt March or The Salt Satyagraha campaign which was based upon Gandhi's principles of nonviolent protest called satyagraha, which he loosely translated as "truth-force". The 24 day, 240 mile march to produce salt without paying tax sparked civil disobedience in millions of Indians and landed Gandhi in jail. Though he was jailed several times in his life, he remained a powerful, compassionate & peaceful voice for change & freedom.
Gandhi's
"weapons" were non-cooperation,
non-violence and peaceful resistance.

All compromise is based on give and take, but there can be no give and take on fundamentals. Any compromise on mere fundamentals is a surrender. For it is all give and no take.

Mohandus Gandhi
Gandhi grew up with a father in politics & a devout mother & Jain traditions that instilled in him early on compassion for sentient beings, vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification, and mutual tolerance between individuals of different creeds. Gandhi was a vegetarian and often fasted as a form of protest. In the stories he read as a child, other deep values were embedded that led him to live a life devoted to truth & Love. Gandhi was part of the Civil Rights Movement in South Africa and it was there that his satyagraha (devotion to the truth), or non-violent protest, took place for the first time. Later, he used satyagraha & non-cooperation to effect major changes in laws & lives in India. Sadly, Mahatma Gandhi was assinated while stepping up to speak at a prayer meeting. His life & way of living are still affecting change many decades later. We are so grateful for Gandhi!
A policy is a temporary creed liable to be changed, but while it holds good it has got to be pursued with apostolic zeal.
